In this overloaded information society readability is critical to your success. When a visitor views a page/post they quickly scan it to see if it’s relevant & beneficial to them, so if you make it difficult they won’t bother.

Here are three simple steps you can take to make your content clear, orderly, neat and easy to read.

1. Make your bog posts scan-able by using headings, subheadings, bullets and lists.
The easiest to read sites are those that break content down into an outline type format with headings and subheadings that clearly define each topic. Keep your thoughts in concise chunks that are easily digestible. Each paragraph should present one topic or thought in 3-5 sentences.

2. Keep paragraphs and sentences small and use white space.
Take a look at the New York Times, Salon or Slate and you can see how they put white space between each paragraph of text. Unless you’re writing fiction it’s best to put some white space between paragraphs. It just makes it easier to view.

3. Move from the broad and general message to detailed information.
There’s an old saying in the newspaper business called, “Don’t bury the lead.” Get your visitors attention as fast as you can by keeping the most interesting part of the post at the beginning. Once you have them hooked, you can introduce more specific and detailed information that will benefit them.

Small Business Websites – why WordPress is the best choice

WordPress

1. Simple to use - WordPress has an easy to use interface and and if you know how to use a word processor you can add and edit the content on your web site. The sites we build are all based on WordPress and we set up the link structure (permalinks) for you so that your pages or posts contain words from the page or post title. Which brings us to the obvious conclusion that your page titles and post titles need to have a keyword in them and preferably near the beginning of the title. By creating good titles you also create good links and URL’s that Google uses for ranking.

Once you’ve decided on a keyword or keyword phrase for a title it should be repeated at least once in the content of the page or post.

Be careful not to overuse a keyword in the titles or content. Use variations instead.

If you decided “dog trainer” was one of your keyword phrases you would want to use that specific phrase on only one page title. You could repeat it throughout your site, but don’t over do it. Instead use “dog training”, “training dog”, “train your dog” etc. Again check out Google Adwords and see what keywords and keyword phrases are being searched for.

SEO Web Site Development Tip #1 – Focus and Harmony

Search Engine Optimization

The most important aspect of SEO web site development is to have a site that has focus and harmony. Focus means the site is concentrated on one type of business or has one purpose. It should be content rich and be a resource for those who visit it. Harmony means that all the pages, titles, blog posts etc. relate to the focus of the site through the use of keywords and content.

Before you do any serious SEO you’ll need to find out what key words and phrases your potential clients are using to find sites like yours. This will take some time, but the effort will be worth it in the long run. Failure to do this will mean lower search engine rank and less chances of having clients find you. Do not assume that you know what words or phrases are being used. One of the best ways to find out what the best keywords are is to use Google Adwords at https://adwords.google.com/.

Google makes most of its billions of dollars by selling Adwords. That’s why they want sites to be relevant to the search term used. The better they can match a search with appropriate relevant content the better their sales will be.

These SEO tips are ranked by order of importance and this is the most important tip I can give you.
